Blackness was all Gren could see. He tried to move his arms, his legs, his toes…anything. Nothing worked. He felt like he was sitting on the outside, looking at a husk of something that might have been a man at one point. He was sure he would never get his revenge now.

And Rumo…what would Rumo think?

God…he hadn’t thought about Rumo in forever. It didn’t matter if he was dead, though, did it? No one would mourn a drug addict and a criminal.

Was he a criminal?

What had he done wrong?

Nothing…that’s right. He was framed.

But was that true? Did he believe a lie?

"Gren! Gren, wake up! Please…"

Who’s voice is that? Gren…is that my name? Is it?

Blue eyes opened slowly. As soon as they did, they closed again. After a minute, they finally dared to open completely.

Gren coughed. He felt tubes in his throat. He couldn’t speak.

He saw a face he didn’t recognize.

"Well, you did wake up. I didn’t think you’d make it. You’re lucky to be alive, after having that much of such a thing running through you."

"Mmmmpf?" Gren tried to speak, but it didn’t work well.

"Now, don’t speak. You probably can’t yet, anyway. Do you understand me?"

Gren nodded, and waves of fire races through his brain. He moaned.

"The pain will subside eventually."

"No more…pain…" Gren formed the words without knowing it.

"Ah…you can speak now. That’s certainly unexpected. As for the pain, I can’t give you anything for it. A painkiller might cause you to go into cranial shock. In other words, you may die if I give you anything."

"Fuck…death…stop the…the…pain…"

"You should rest. When you wake up again, we’ll talk. There are some things you should know…"

"Hate…you…"

"I’m sure you do."

The doctor left. Gren tried to turn his head, but the waves of fire returned with a vengeance. He groaned again. Eventually, he found a way to sleep.

It was three days before he woke up again.
